Race report: B-series Round 4: Weston

Race report: B-series Round 4: Weston

Three-Wheeled Deckchair Racing

Round 4 of the B-Series opened at about 11.30 on what was one of the hottest days of the year in the UK. With 51 people registered we had the biggest fleet of the year; the event was going to be a blast! The lack of rain and high tides had dried out the top of the Windzone, so a course was set up on the lower half near the mud-line. With the wind coming off the land and flattening any sea breeze, we all knew these would be challenging conditions.
After the Briefing by Chris Moore of Weston Windsport (the R.O for the event and The Euros) most people snuck in a quick practise on 5.5 sails as Chris finalised the course. Racing got underway with Chris fitting in 2 races in each class before lunch. With everyone on 5.5 sails there were some close wheel-to-wheel finishes as we all headed for the transponder and ended up in each other’s wind shadow, it was hands on wheels to get over the line.
After ordering a cone of chips for lunch a few of us went out to practise as the wind picked up and others enjoyed their strawberries and cream. Us few managed to get the 4m to work better than our 5.5s and I thought this might give an edge after lunch.
However the wind dropped and it was back to 5.5s with Chris doing a sterling effort to fit in another 2 races in each class, just beating the race against the tide as the last production race finished. I tried a few new tactics on the fly and managed to muck up every start on Saturday!
Some of the competitors headed to Tutto's in the evening (Euro's dinner venue) and enjoyed a lovely evening meal in great company!
With the tide coming up higher on Sunday we were all glad of there being a bit more beach to play with, however after the first briefing and an excellent effort from Chris and the marshalls to set up a course, racing was abandoned after lunch due to lack of wind. With 4 races in the bag and a discard each, prize-giving happened about 1.30. Tom Rimmer, Justin Heap and Paul Vernon performed excellently, with 0 points for the weekend as well as Ray Bailey who took 2nd in Heavy Production; excellent performance for his second B-series!
Many thanks to Weston Windsport for sponsoring the event, also to Chris Moore for being R.O and all the marshalls who helped run the event. Lastly Thanks to all the competitors who entered and made it another friendly, fun weekend of racing.
